Artist:Marshall Gilkes and WDR Big Band
Song:My Shining Hour
Album:Koln
Trombonist Marshall Gilkes seems to specialize in big bands. He has recorded with Maria Schneider and his recent albums have been with the WDR Big Band in Germany. He was born Sept. 30, 1978 in Camp Springs, MD. His mother was a classical singer and pianist. His father conducted the Air Force Academy band. Of course being in the military his family moved around a lot. Gilkes has a Bachelor in Music from Juilliard. Conrad Herwig and Wycliffe Gordon were his instructors. He has recorded with Maria Schneider Big Band, John Fedchock New York Big Band, David Berger's Sultans of Swing, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and the Big 3 Palladium Orchestra. He also plays with harpist Edmar Castaneda. Since 2004 he has recorded as a leader for his own Alternate Sides label. My Shining Hour is from the 2015 album Koln recorded with the WDR Big Band in Germany. Except for that song, Gilkes wrote all the album songs. My Shining Hour was written by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer for the 1943 film The Sky's The Limit. The song was popularized by Glen Gray and is now considered a jazz standard. This concert aired on German TV. Gilkes returned to Germany to record a second album with this band called Always Forward. Gilkes does a lot of touring as a guest soloist in big bands. He occasionally appears in smaller groups and even has his own trio. But big bands seems to be his specialty. Here's Marshall Gilkes and WDR Big Band performing My Shining Hour on German TV 2014.
