Song:Once, Twice, Three Times
Album:The Very Best Of Howard Hewett
R&B singer songwriter Howard Hewett is probably best known as a member of the popular group Shalamar. After they split up, he had success mostly on the R&B charts in the late 80s. He was born Oct. 1, 1955 in Akron, OH. He moved to Los Angeles in 1976 where he met club owners John and Alonzo Daniels and formed the group Beverly Hills. It was at this time that he met Jeffrey Daniel and Jody Watley of Shalamar. After an overseas tour, Hewett was working on an album with Funkadelic guitarist Eddie Hazel when Daniel called him looking for a new lead singer for Shalamar. Shalamar was very successful in the early 80s until they were in a money dispute with Solar Records owner Dick Griffey. Hewett left Shalamar in 1985. He signed with Elektra Records and released the 1986 album I Commit To Love. I'm For Real and Stay were top ten R&B hits. Forever and Ever was Hewett's second album in 1988. A duet with Lynn Davis Strange Relationship was a top ten R&B hit. Then Once, Twice, Three Times reached #15. Hewett usually wrote and produced his own music. He wrote Once, Twice, Three Times with Kenny Aubrey and Hewett produced and arranged it with Monty Seward who worked on all of Hewett's albums. George Duke played keyboards and Gerald Albright played the sax solo. Hewett continued to have success on the R&B charts until he left Elektra in 1992. This Rhino comp covers his Elektra recordings. Since then Hewett has recorded occasionally. But mostly he reformed Shalamar with Daniel and they have toured. Here's Howard Hewett performing Once, Twice, Three Times on the 1988 Soul Train Music Awards.
