AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Beck

Artist:Beck
Song:Loser
Album:Mellow Gold

Beck Hansen is one of the more unlikely success stories in recent memory. Loser was a top ten hit in 1994. It is his biggest hit to date. I don't think Beck is interested in commercial success. He likes to experiment with music. He was born Bek David Campbell July 8, 1970 in Los Angeles. His father David Campbell is an arranger and conductor for films. His mother Bibbe Hansen was an Andy Warhol artist in the 60s. When his parents split up, he took his mom's name. So his legal name is Beck Hansen. He started out as a folksinger playing coffee houses. He seemed to be going nowhere when Bong Load Records owner Rob Schnapf liked him and introduced Beck to producer Carl Stephenson. Stephenson had hip hop leanings and Schnapf thought he could do something with Beck's folk music. That's when Loser was created. Beck didn't like the record but Bong Load released it in 1993. Loser got enough radio airplay that Geffen Records signed Beck after a bidding with Warner Bros. and Capitol. Geffen won because they allowed Beck to release music on independent labels. Mellow Gold was Beck's first album on Geffen. Loser reached #10 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was certified Platinum. Beck hasn't had any other hit singles but his 1996 album Odelay was certified 2XPlatinum. Beck continues to record though I don't think he cares about record sales. He left Geffen after the 2008 album Modern Guilt. He didn't sign with a new label at first but his most recent albums are on Capitol. His latest CD Colors was released last year. He toured to support it. He has also produced albums for others and he continues to experiment. That's what he seems to enjoy. Here's the video for Loser by Beck.
