Song:Super Strut
Album:The Story of Acid Jazz
Acid Jazz was created by British DJ Gilles Peterson for British clubs. Most of the music didn't cross the pond. But if you're a fan of smooth jazz or R&B, Acid Jazz might be for you. The Apostles were a one off band. But they had some success in clubs with this smooth jazz cover of the Eumir Deodato 70s jazz fusion classic Super Strut. The two guys behind The Apostles were sax player John Willmott and keyboard player John Dutton. Willmott is the better known of the two. He played sax for another popular Acid Jazz group The James Taylor Quartet. Dutton played keyboards for a version of the pioneering ska group Bad Manners. They decided to record an album together in 1992. They called themselves The Apostles and it was released on Acid Jazz Records. The album is mostly covers. Their cover of Super Strut did well enough in British clubs that the album was released in the US by Hollywood Records. But The Apostles only recorded one album. It's out of print but you can get Super Strut on this 2CD various artists comp which is a good intro to Acid Jazz for beginners. Willmott returned to The James Taylor Quartet and he was also in the spinoff group New Jersey Kings. More recently he was a member of The Perceptions led by Mark "Snowboy' Cotgrove. This was a one off spinoff of Snowboy and the Latin Section. That is certainly in the tradition of the Acid Jazz Willmott recorded with The Apostles. Here's a video of Super Strut by The Apostles.
