Ronda Rousey |
It has been confirmed that 145lb phenom Rowdy Ronda Rousey will face Canadian Muay Thai specialist Julia Budd on the Nov. 18 Strikeforce show in Las Vegas. Of course the way Ronda is going we may have to start calling her The Armbar Queen. And that's what Ronda used to win in 25 seconds in her Strikeforce debut over Sarah D'Alelio. All three of Ronda's pro wins have been via armbar in under a minute. Ronda is from Santa Monica, CA and trains with "those Armenian guys" at Team Hayastan. Ronda won a bronze medal in judo at the 2008 Olympics and her mom was a judo competitor. Julia Budd is from Port Moody, BC and is trained by former UFC fighter Lance Gibson. She was a Muay Thai fighter for several years and handed Gina Carano her only Muay Thai loss. Her MMA record is 2-1. After getting smoked by Amanda Nunes in January, she bounced back with a win over Germaine De Randamie in June. I didn't think much of her lay and pray strategy in that fight and I don't see her getting away with that nonsense with Ronda. The good thing is that Julia is a legit 145 pounder and she does have striking skills. Fans keep asking me what Ronda will do when she faces a good striker. As I've said before, that's the wrong question. The right question is can anyone neutralize Ronda's speed and quickness. I haven't seen anything in Julia that tells me that she can do that. So I don't know how long this fight will last but Ronda knows she doesn't get paid by the hour. Expect another armbar submission and hope the ref doesn't screw it up.
