AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Gino Vannelli

Artist:Gino Vannelli
Song:I Just Wanna Stop
Album:20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Gino Vannelli

I Just Wanna Stop was the only top ten hit for Canadian singer songwriter Gino Vannelli in 1978. He had several chart hits in the 70s and 80s. He was born June 16, 1952 in Montreal the son of big band musician Russ Vannelli. Gino has worked with his brothers Joe and Ross for his whole career. Vannelli recorded for RCA in 1970 under the name Vann Elli. He studied music at McGill University in Montreal. So the three Vannelli brothers went to Los Angeles in search of a record deal and camped out in front of A & M Records in a last ditch effort before returning home. A & M owner Herb Alpert gave them an audition and signed them up. Gino was the singer so the albums were released under his name. But Joe usually co-wrote all the songs and wrote the arrangements and was using synthesizers before it was popular to do so. And Ross played bass. People Gotta Move reached #22 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1975. Also, Vannelli was only the second caucasian to appear on Soul Train. Guitarist Dennis Coffey was the first. Vannelli toured with Stevie Wonder. I Just Wanna Stop reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978 and Brother To Brother went Platinum. The song topped the Canadian charts and Vannelli won several Juno awards. He was always a bigger star in Canada than in the US. Vannelli left A & M for Arista in 1981 and seemed to fade until Black Cars became a big dance hit in 1985. It was also a top five hit in Canada. You can get his A & M recordings on this budget comp. Gino Vannelli lives in The Netherlands. He continues to perform and record occasionally. But his days in mainstream music are well past him. I think a lot of fans remember Gino's hair from the 70s. You get to see that in this video of I Just Wanna Stop by Gino Vannelli.
