AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Night Ranger

Artist:Night Ranger
Song:Sister Christian
Album:Greatest Hits

I guess Night Ranger is one of the bands that typifies 80s hard rock. They had a very good run and Sister Christian was their biggest hit in 1984. Night Ranger is from San Francisco and was formed after the demise of Rubicon. Rubicon was led by Sly & The Family Stone sax player Jerry Martini. After modest success, they split up in 1979. Rubicon bassist Jack Blades, drummer Kelly Keagy and guitarist Brad Gillis formed a new group Stereo. After adding former Montrose keyboard player Alan Fitzgerald and guitarist Jeff Watson, the group name was changed to Ranger. They signed with Boardwalk Records and released the 1982 album Dawn Patrol. When they were sued by the country band The Rangers, they became Night Ranger. Meanwhile, Gillis filled in as guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne when Randy Rhoads died. When Boardwalk closed, they signed with MCA's Camel label. Their 1983 album Midnight Madness went 2XPlatinum and Sister Christian reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Keagy wrote Sister Christian and sang lead. He wrote it for his sister Christy and she was so upset she considered changing her name. Gillis said they recorded Sister Christian in 1982 but the band thought it was too sappy to go on Dawn Patrol. They thought it would hurt their rep as hard rockers. It turned out to be Night Ranger's biggest hit and most memorable song. They had another top ten hit with the similar power ballad Sentimental Street in 1985. Night Ranger faded in the late 80s. Fitzgerald left in 1988 and they split up in 1989. Jack Blades went on to form Damn Yankees with Ted Nugent and Tommy Shaw. Night Ranger reformed in 1991 and the band still tours and records today. Blades returned in 1996 and Keagy and Gillis are still part of Night Ranger. You can get all their hits on this comp. Here's the video for Sister Christian by Night Ranger. I'm sure it will bring back memories of big hair of the 80s.
