Artist:Adele
Song:Rolling In The Deep
Album:21
At a time when it seems like every singer needs a gimmick to sell records, it is refreshing that British singer songwriter Adele Atkins' gimmick is a great voice. But she is fortunate that her record company and her producers encourage her to be herself. She was born May 5, 1988 in London, England to a single teenage mom. Adele says The Spice Girls got her interested in music as a child and as a teen, she got into R & B. After graduating from The BRIT School for Performing Arts & Technology in 2006, she was more interested in producing than performing. One of her demos was posted on MySpace. This led to a call from Nick Huggett of XL Recordings who wanted to sign her to a contract. She signed after he got her a manager. XL started as a dance music offshoot of Beggars Banquet and Adele has turned out to be an unexpected windfall for them. After her debut single Hometown Glory charted, she recorded the 2008 CD 19 mostly with producer Jim Abbiss. She had a lot of chart success and received several awards. It was at this point that Columbia picked up Adele for US distribution. Rolling In The Deep was the first single from her second CD 21 and it was a number one hit worldwide. Rick Rubin supervised the album but Rolling In The Deep was produced by Paul Epworth and he co-wrote the song with Adele. Epworth started out as lead singer and guitarist for the band Lomax. After recording one album in 2003, the band split up and he turned to production and has worked with Florence & The Machine and Cee-Lo Green. According to Adele, the song started out with a gospel and blues vibe. But after an argument with Epworth, he convinced her to give it a harder edge. Basically it blew up and set all kinds of sales records. And it's all based on Adele's vocal ability. I think she's a new age Dusty Springfield. And unlike some of today's current crop of singers, she's not playing on sex appeal or being outrageous. That's why I think she will have a long career. Adele says she has written several songs for her next CD. Let's see what she comes up with. Here's the video for Rolling In The Deep by Adele.
