AccuRadio Song Of The Day-The Honeydrippers

Artist:The Honeydrippers
Song:Sea Of Love
Album:Only Rock 'N' Roll: 1985-1989

Led Zeppelin lead singer Robert Plant started The Honeydrippers in 1981 as a diversion to allow him to indulge in his love for classic R & B. The band had session musicians like guitarists Robbie Blunt and Andy Sylvester, sax player Keith Evans, harmonica player Ricky Cool, bassist Jim Hickman and drummer Kevin O'Neil. The Honeydrippers were supposed to be a cover band just for fun. But when Plant started writing original songs with Blunt, he put The Honeydrippers on the back burner and recorded the solo albums Pictures At Eleven and The Principle Of Moments. After those albums, Plant decided to revive The Honeydrippers as an all star band with Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Nile Rodgers, Paul Shaffer along with bassist Wayne Pedziwiatr and drummer Dave Weckl. They didn't even record a full album. It was a five song EP of R & B classic covers. The cover of Phil Phillips' 1959 classic Sea Of Love reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Roy Brown cover Rockin' At Midnight reached the top 30. The Honeydrippers also appeared on Saturday Night Live with guest Brian Setzer. So it was pretty successful. But Plant resumed his solo career and has never revived The Honeydrippers. He continues to be successful today. The Honeydrippers CD is available but it's less than 20 minutes. So I recommend this various artists comp on WEA's Essex budget label. Here's the video for Sea Of Love by The Honeydrippers.
