AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Railroad Earth

Artist:Railroad Earth

Song:Mighty River

Album:Bird in a House

Railroad Earth mixes bluegrass with country rock and jam band tendencies. This kind of music is categorized as JamGrass. I wouldn't recommend it to traditional bluegrass fans but Grateful Dead fans will like it. Railroad Earth is from Stillwater, NJ led by lead singer, guitarist and main songwriter Todd Sheaffer. They do not perform bluegrass standards. He formed Railroad Earth in 2001 with Tim Carbone on violin, John Skehan on mandolin, Andy Goessling on banjo, Dave Von Dollen on bass and Carey Harmon on drums. They knew each other from other bands. But when they started rehearsing, they thought they had something special. They recorded a demo which got them a spot on the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. And then they self released the 2001 album The Black Bear Sessions and that got them a deal with the bluegrass label Sugar Hill. Mighty River is from their 2002 Sugar Hill debut album Bird in a House. The band produced the album. Sheaffer wrote all the songs. The only added musician was Buck Dilly on pedal steel guitar. Bird in the House is available as a digital download. Railroad Earth has also recorded for SCI Fidelity which is home The String Cheese Incident and other jam bands. Lately they have been recording for their own label, most recently in 2022. Andy Goessling died in 2018. He has been replaced by Mike Robinson. Here's Railroad Earth performing Mighty River on a 2006 episode of the PBS TV series Bluegrass Underground.
