Marc Anthony has been one of the most popular Latin music singers since the 90s. He had success in English when he scored a top five hit with the 1999 single I Need To Know. The 1999 album Marc Anthony is one of his two English album to date. He was born Marco Antonio Muniz Sept. 16, 1968 in New York City. His parents are Puerto Rican. He was named after Mexican Singer Marco Antonio Muniz. He grew up in Spanish Harlem. His father taught him to play guitar and exposed him to a variety of music. Anthony says his biggest influence is legendary Puerto Rican bandleader Tito Puente. Anthony started out as a session singer for freestyle and house music acts in New York. He changed his name to Marc Anthony to avoid confusion with his namesake. For the next few years he worked on freestyle music with guys like Little Louie Vega and Todd Terry. After Vega and Anthony opened for a 1992 Tito Puente Madison Square Garden concert, Anthony switched to Latin music. He signed with RMM Records and had immediate success in the Latin market. By the late 90s, Anthony was one of the most popular Latin Singers. RMM wanted Anthony to record in English. But he decided to leave for Sony. He thought RMM was ripping him off. He sued them and the lawsuit was settled. But while it was going on, Anthony couldn't record in Spanish. So he accepted Sony's Tommy Mottola's invitation to record in English. The result was the 1999 album Marc Anthony. Anthony wrote and produced with several guys including Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins and Walter Atanasieff. But about half the album including I Need To Know was produced by Cory Rooney who had worked on Jennifer Lopez' breakthrough album On the 6. I Need To Know reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was certified 3XPlatinum. Anthony released a second English album Mended in 2002 also with Rooney. When there was no hit single and the album wasn't as successful as the first one, Anthony decided to return to recording in Spanish. He's still successful in that market.
