Tetsuya Koda, Ayumi Kurihara |
Remember when Ayumi Kurihara won the NEO Singles Championship and the NWA Pacific Championship from Yoshiko Tamura on the final NEO show and Tamura's retirement show? There was a lot of speculation about her carrying the titles proudly and defending them against all comers. I didn't think that would happen. I thought it was one of the most meaningless events in joshi puroresu history. And it cemented Tamura's legacy as a good wrestler when she wanted to be good and a very selfish person. If Kurihara had won those belts in October and had a run with them, that would have been OK. But that's not what happened. My suspicions were confirmed today when Kurihara returned the belts to NEO president Tetsuyo Koda at a press conference held today at the Champion Wrestling Store. Remember Kurihara never defended those belts. And apparently Koda has been bugging her to return them. They are officially retired. Kurihara said she wanted to defend them but Koda would not allow it. And now that she is going to Mexico City to challenge Amapola for the CMLL Women's Championship on June 6, she thought now is a good time to return them. She also announced that she is going back to Mexico from July 6 to13. Koda had nothing much to say and his behaviour proves that Kurihara's NEO title win was the sham that many of us believed it was. A big fat raspberry to Koda and Tamura.
