Amapola retains CMLL title on May 8 REINA show

Amapola keeps her title
Universal Women's Pro Wrestling REINA held their first big show yesterday at Shinjuku FACE. They've actually been running shows since January but this was their first show since announcing a partnership with CMLL in Mexico. The main event had Amapola defending her CMLL Women's Championship against Marcela in a two out of three fall match. Amapola retained the title. Meanwhile, Ayumi Kurihara earned a CMLL title shot with a win over Mima Shimoda who lives in Mexico. I don't know if they will do that match in Japan or if Ayumi is going to Mexico. She's very popular there but she never wrestled a match of that magnitude over there. There was also a match for something called the TLW World's Women's Championship. I don't know what that is. I seem to recall WAVE creating a TLW tag team title. There are too many damn belts in the joshi business already. Fans in attendance didn't seem to know what it was either. Aki Kambayashi who I think used to work for Ito Dojo won over mystery gaijin Kelly Skater from Australia and SHIMMER. There was no advance notice of this. Of course running the company is veteran Yumiko Hotta and she teamed with Manami Toyota and won over Hailey Hatred & the masked luchadora Zeuxis. Apparently fans really hate Hotta and think she should retire. I just wonder if she learned her lesson. Her selfish booking killed A To Z a few years ago and if she does that here, fans will quickly get tired of that. Of course REINA doesn't have much of a roster. So they are depending on the Mexicans and popular freelancers like Kurihara to beef up the shows. And next week's random gaijin are Roxie Cotton and Mia Yim. I've never been a fan of bringing foreigners in for one shots. Younger wrestlers can learn a lot in an extended time period. They're not going to learn anything in a few days. They're not a draw and if they perform poorly, fans get down on gaijin in general. But I like the use of luchadoras as they are a draw in Japan.
