There are many who hail Iggy Pop as the Godfather Of Punk because they think he invented punk when he led The Stooges. I don't know if he invented punk but there's no question of his influence. And anyone who saw his recent performance on American Idol saw that he is still a compelling performer though he has toned down some of his insane stage antics. He was born James Osterberg Jr. Apr. 21, 1947 in Muskegon, MI. He formed his first band The Iguanas while attending high school in Ann Arbor and the nickname Iggy was from that band. After leading The Prime Movers, Iggy moved to Chicago to learn more about the blues. When he returned home in 1967, he formed The Stooges influenced by local bands like MC5. Supposedly Iggy was the first to do stage diving and other crazy antics on stage. It didn't seem to help record sales as The Stooges were dropped by Elektra and The Stooges disbanded in 1971. Iggy met David Bowie and Bowie wanted to produce an album in England. The Stooges were reformed and signed with Columbia. The Stooges ultimately failed because of Iggy's drug addiction causing fights with the other members. Iggy eventually went to rehab in Los Angeles. David Bowie was one of his few visitors. They moved to Germany to record and Iggy signed with RCA. Lust For Life the second album of that deal. Bowie wrote and produced most of the songs with Iggy and the band was Bowie's backup group Tin Machine featuring Soupy Sales' sons Hunt Sales on drums and Tony Sales on bass. The album didn't sell and Iggy soon left RCA for Arista. But Lust For Life got a big boost when Danny Boyle used it on the soundtrack of the 1996 film Trainspotting. They even produced a video. This introduced Iggy Pop to a whole new audience. He has recorded for Virgin Records since 1990 and this 2CD comp is an excellent overview of his career. He's supposed to release a new CD this year. Iggy Pop still tours and is revered as an icon of rock music. His only concession to age is he won't stage dive anymore. Here's the video for Lust For Life by Iggy Pop from the film Trainspotting.
