Artist:Shannon
Song:Let The Music Play
Album:Street Jams: Electric Funk, Vol. 2
Let The Music Play was a top ten pop hit in 1984. But the song really made its mark on the dance floor and today the song is considered pioneering in its use of electronic instruments. It didn't hurt that Shannon Greene was very pretty and a good singer. She started out in jazz. But her career was sunk by record company problems. She was born May 2, 1958 in Washington, DC and while attending college in Brooklyn, NY, she joined the New York Jazz Ensemble as a singer. A chance meeting with Return To Forever drummer Lenny White led to some recording sessions and that led to Let The Music Play taking the dance floor by storm in 1983. The song was produced by New York DJ Chris Barbosa and his partner Mark Leggatt. Barbosa was working as a producer for Emergency Records and was messing around with electro funk beats. They hired Shannon to sing and they wound up with a major label record deal on Atlantic. Let The Music Play reached #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1984. Shannon released three albums on Atlantic but Let The Music Play was her only big hit. You can get it on this Rhino various artists budget comp. Emergency Records closed in 1987 and there were also legal problems surrounding Let The Music Play because it was based on another song and no credit was given. Shannon left Atlantic and still tours today but has rarely recorded. VH1 did a Where Are They Now about her several years ago. So her success was short lived but memorable. Here's the video for Let The Music Play by Shannon.
