Song:Don't Stop Believin'
Album:Glee The Music: Season One Volume 1
Glee was a very popular TV show about a high school choir. I never watched it. One of the things that made it successful was they covered many pop hits from the past. Don't Stop Believin' was the first single from the first Glee album. It was a top five hit and I think the success of that single set the show up for a long run. There were a couple of other top ten hits but Don't Stop Believin' was the first. The main guy behind Glee was Ryan Murphy who had worked on Popular and the FX series Nip/Tuck. He selected all the music. The songs were used to advance the story and he chose a mix of covers and Broadway songs. Probably the key cast members in the early days were Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison. Both were experienced Broadway performers. Cory Monteith didn't have that kind of experience. He had done some film and TV in his native Canada. But he proved to Murphy that he could sing and got the key role of the star quarterback. The duet of Don't Stop Believin' was in the series pilot which aired May 2009. It reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. That set things up for when the show returned in September. Glee was a hit for several years. Columbia released 16 albums from Glee and all of them sold well. As I think most know, Monteith committed suicide on July 13, 2013 at age 31 after he split up with Lea. He had a long history of drug problems. Of course Glee did a tribute to him. By this time the show had run its course. The ratings were down and Murphy decided to end the show. Of course he has gone on to produce other shows like Feud and American Horror Story. He just signed a big deal with Netflix. Lea Michele released a couple of albums and starred in the Fox series Scream Queens and the ABC series The Mayor. She seems to be concentrating on her music right now. I would not be surprised to see her head back to Broadway. Here's Lea Michele and Cory Monteith performing Don't Stop Believin' in the Glee pilot.
