Song:Prairie Town
Album:Anthology
Guitarist Randy Bachman is best known for his days with The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive. But he has also had other bands and recorded solo projects. Prairie Town is from a 1992 album that he recorded as Bachman. It looks to be an attempt to start a new band but this is the only album that was released. The most notable thing about Prairie Town is a guest appearance by Neil Young. He was born Sept. 27, 1943 in Winnipeg. Bachman and Chad Allan formed what became The Guess Who in the early 60s. Bachman left The Guess Who in 1970 shortly after the release of their biggest hit American Woman. He released a solo album Axe. Then he formed the country rock group Brave Belt with Chad Allan. They recorded two albums on Reprise. Allan left after Fred Turner joined and Brave Belt became Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO). Of course they were very successful in the 70s. Bachman left BTO in 1977. He released the solo album Survivor in 1978. Then he formed Ironhorse with bassist Tom Sparks. They released a couple of albums and they were particularly successful in Europe. Then Bachman reunited with Turner and released an album as Union. After a 1983 Guess Who reunion, BTO reformed for several years until 1991. He formed a new band Bachman and the 1992 album Any Road was released on the Canadian label Linus Entertainment. Bachman still records for that label. Prairie Town is an autobiographical song featuring Neil Young on guitar and Young and Margo Timmins of Cowboy Junkies on backup vocals. The video was filmed at Young's farm. The band is Jason Sniderman of Blue Peter on keyboards, Richard Cochrane on bass and one time BTO member Billy Rea "Crash" Chapman on drums. Former 70s disco singer Denise McCann wrote the arrangements. The video was played on MuchMusic but it doesn't look like the band recorded another album or toured. Bachman tours with his show Every Song Tells A Story which got a DVD release. And he has also reunited with Burton Cummings of The Guess Who and Fred Turner of BTO. He seems to alternate tours with those guys. Bachman's latest solo CD Heavy Blues was released in 2015. This Anthology CD covers Bachman's entire career. Bachman is an Officer of the Order of Canada. And he was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame first as a member of The Guess Who in 2001 and then as a solo artist in 2012. And he hosts the CBC Radio show Vinyl Tap. Here's the video for Prairie Town by Bachman featuring Neil Young.
