Steve Lacy started out as the guitarist for the R&B band The Internet. Then he started working on solo projects. Now he has topped the charts with the 2022 single Bad Habit. The song spread through TikTok. My guess is his future is as a songwriter and producer. He was born May 23, 1998 in Compton, CA. He was raised by his mother. His father wasn't around and then he died when Lacy was ten. He first became interested in guitar through the video game Guitar Hero. Then he got a real guitar. He met Jameel Bruner in his high school jazz band. They would go on to form The Internet. After releasing a couple of albums, the members decided to record solo projects. Lacy was recording music on his iPhone. He also produced some artists, most notably Kendrick Lamar. Lacy released a 2017 EP and produced Solange, Mac Miller and Dev Hynes. After releasing a couple of albums, Lacy signed with RCA for the 2022 album Gemini Rights. The single Bad Habit topped the Billboard Hot 100. Lacy wrote and produced the album. For the most part, Bad Habit spread through TikTok. For that reason, the success seems like a fluke. Lacy's next album could have another big hit. But history says it's unlikely and he'll spend more of his time writing and producing for others. That should be his long term strategy anyway. Gemini Heart is available as a digital download.
