AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Saves The Day

Artist:Saves the Day

Song:At Your Funeral

Album:Stay What You Are

It's likely that Saves the Day would have been more successful if they had been on a major label for any length of time. But they have done pretty well for an indie band. The 2001 album Stay What You Are is their biggest seller to date. The leader and only original member of Saves the Day is Chris Conley. He's the lead singer and writes all the songs. He's from Princeton, NJ. He was 13 years old when he formed the band Indifference. He soon changed the band name to Selfer. And in 1997 he changed the name to Saves the Day. The band lineup has been fluid which indicates that Conley is probably a control freak and not the easiest guy to get along with. Conley was still in high school when Saves the Day signed with the indie label Equal Vision and released two albums. This attracted attention from other labels and they signed with the much larger Vagrant Records. The 2001 album Stay What You Are had a much more commercial pop sound. Conley wrote and produced the album. Rob Schnapf is credited as producer but he's a recording engineer best known for working with Elliott Smith. The songs were credited to the band. So Conley tried to hide that he's a control freak. The video for At Your Funeral got airplay on MTV2. Saves the Day appeared on Conan O'Brien and The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn. The album sold 120K copies. So it did well for an indie release and Vagrant did a good job. Meanwhile guitarist Ted Alexander and drummer Bryan Newman left the band. Maybe they got tired of Conley's behavior. The success of the album got Saves the Day a deal with DreamWorks Records. There were two problems with the 2003 album In Reverie. One was that DreamWorks didn't like the album and refused to support it. Then DreamWorks closed and sold the label to Interscope. Saves the Day returned to Vagrant for the 2006 album Sound the Alarm. And other than the 2011 album Daybreak for Razor & Tie, Saves the Day has recorded first for Vagrant and then Equal Vision. The latest album was released in 2018. Stay What You Are is available as a budget CD. Saves the Day is not on tour due to 2021 sexual misconduct allegations against Conley. He's been keeping a low profile. Here's the video for At Your Funeral by Saves the Day.
