Artist:Mr. Big
Song:To Be With You
Album:Greatest Hits
The hard rock band Mr. Big had their only number one hit with To Be With You in 1991. As we see with hard rock bands, the song wasn't typical of their music. They are very popular in Japan. Mr. Big was formed by bassist Billy Sheehan after he left David Lee Roth's band in 1998. First he recruited singer Eric Martin who had recorded solo for several years with little success. Then he added guitarist Paul Gilbert from the group Racer X and session drummer Pat Torpey. They signed with Atlantic Records in 1989. Their first album didn't sell but they caught on in Japan and are still very popular there today. But then they struck gold when To Be With You topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1991. It was from the album Lean Into It. Eric Martin wrote the song when he was a teen and had never recorded it. They also had a top twenty hit with Just Take My Heart. Subsequent albums didn't do as well but the Japanese success continued. This comp is a good intro to their music. Paul Gilbert left in 1997 to reform Racer X and he was replaced by former Poison guitarist Richie Kotzen. That band continued but split up in 2002 after Sheehan went on tour with Steve Vai and the others resented that. The original lineup reformed in 2009 and they released a CD in 2011 and still tour Japan regularly. Here's the video for To Be with You by Mr. Big.
