Artist:The Proclaimers
Song:I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)
Album:Sunshine On Leith
This now ubiquitous pop anthem went nowhere when first released in 1988 but fluked into immortality when used in the 1993 film Benny & Joon. The Proclaimers are indentical twin brothers Charlie & Craig Reid (born Mar. 5, 1962 in Auchtermuchty, Scotland). The Proclaimers were formed in 1983 and one of their demos got the attention of the popular group The Housemartins and The Proclaimers opened for them on their 1986 UK tour. This earned The Proclaimers a contract with Chrysalis Records. Letter From America from their 1987 debut This Is The Story reached #3 on the UK singles chart. I'm Gonna Be was on their 1988 follow up Sunshine On Leith and reached #11 on the UK singles chart. It was produced by Pete Wingfield who had also worked with The Housemartins. The Proclaimers were inactive at that point until I'm Gonna Be was used in the 1993 film Benny & Joon and The Proclaimers became sensations in the US. The song reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. But their 1994 follow up CD Hit The Highway failed to capitalize and The Proclaimers disappeared until resurfacing in 2000. They now have their own label and a US distribution deal with Nettwerk Records. Nettwerk rereleased Sunshine On Leith in 2001 with several bonus tracks. They're still popular in England as their latest CD Life With You reached #13 on the UK album charts but it looks like they are destined to be a one hit wonder in the US. Here's the video for I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers.
