Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Bobby Hutcherson

Artist:Bobby Hutcherson
Song:Idle While
Album:Dialogue

Vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson has been one of the top jazz musicians since he started out with Blue Note in the 60s. And he's still at it today. He was born Jan. 27, 1941 in Los Angeles. He studied piano as a child but got hooked on the vibraphone when he heard a Milt Jackson record and saved up enough money to buy his own. There are two ways of playing the vibraphone; two mallets or four mallets. Hutcherson studied the four mallet technique with Dave Pike and started playing gigs in Los Angeles. In 1961, he joined a band led by trombonist Al Grey & sax player Billy Mitchell. They played the Birdland in New York and Hutcherson stayed in New York and became a session musician for Blue Note. His work with Jackie McLean and on Eric Dolphy's 1964 classic Out To Lunch earned him the chance to record as a leader. The 1965 album Dialogue was the result. It's classic post bop jazz with Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Sam Rivers on sax, Andrew Hill on piano, Richard Davis on bass and Joe Chambers on drums. Blue Note has reissued this classic on CD with a bonus track. Hutcherson moved back to Los Angeles in 1967 and formed a band with tenor sax player Harold Land. After some underappreciated records, they split and Hutcherson moved to San Francisco. He would reunite with Land for a while but Hutcherson left Blue Note in 1977 for Columbia. Bobby Hutcherson continues to be one of the most in demand jazz musicians today. More recently, he is part of the SF Jazz Collective with trumpeter Nicholas Payton and sax player Joshua Redman. Bobby Hutcherson's latest CD is For Sentimental Reasons featuring pianist Renee Rosnes and was released on the Kind Of Blue label in June 2007. Here's Bobby Hutcherson performing Little B's Poem with Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter & Tony Williams Tokyo 1989.
