Max Roach is one of the all time great jazz drummers. He was an innovator in the 50s and continues to experiment with percussion techniques today. He also has his own record label. This is from an album he recorded for Verve in the 50s and it's not even one of his major recordings and it's still really good. I do recommend the Clifford Brown/Max Roach 2CD comp available on Mercury.
