I know what you're thinking. Is that a typo? Nope. The Red Hot Chilli Pipers play rock music with bagpipes and drums. They are very popular in Scotland. Look, I remember when Rufus Harley played jazz bagpipes in the 60s. So nothing surprises me. The Red Hot Chilli Pipers were formed in 2002 by students at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. The founding members were Stuart Cassells and Kevin Macdonald on bagpipes and Malcolm McEwan on drums. The rest of the group has fluid membership. After winning the 2007 BBC talent show When Will I Be Famous?, they signed with REL Records. Bagrock To The Masses was their debut in 2007. What they mostly do is play rock classics like Smoke On The Water with bagpipes. Obviously this band is an acquired taste. But as you can see in the video, they put on a good show. And they are trained musicians. They know what they are doing. They have toured throughout Europe and Asia. I think they toured America as part of a 2010 world tour. Cassells left in 2011. He was having trouble with what is commonly known as writer's cramp and he couldn't play the bagpipes anymore. He was replaced and the band continues. Their latest CD Octane was released in 2016. Here's the Red Hot Chilli Pipers performing Smoke On The Water and Thunderstruck 2009. Even if you aren't into the music you have to admire their musicianship.
