If you like your jazz with a little Caribbean flavor, you may want to check out trumpeter Etienne Charles. He plays New York City jazz clubs and he has recorded as a leader since 2006. He also teaches at Michigan State University. He was born July 24, 1983 in Trinidad. Charles is a fourth generation musician. His grandfather Ralph Charles taught him to play the cuatro. And he was in his father Francis Charles' calypso band Phase II Pan Groove. Charles played trumpet as a teen. He was a classmate of pianist Marcus Roberts at Florida State and he also studied at Juilliard. Charles toured with Wynton Marsalis, Monty Alexander, Gerald Wilson's big band and others. He won the 2006 National Trumpet Competition and he also released his debut album Culture Shock. He joined the Michigan State faculty on 2011 and he also released Kaiso on his own label. As I said, if you like your jazz mixed with Caribbean music, Charles should be right up your alley. Musicians are Brian Hogans on alto sax, Jacques Schwartz-Bart on tenor sax, Sullivan Fortner on piano, Ben Williams on bass and Obed Calvaire on drums. Those musicians are on the video. Special guests include pianist Monty Alexander, percussionist Ralph MacDonald and calypso artist Lord Superior. Charles just released a new CD Carnival: The Sound of a People Vol. 1. So his Caribbean roots will continue to be a big part of his music. Here's Etienne Charles performing Kaiso at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola at Lincoln Center in New York City Aug. 1, 2011.
