AccuRadio Song Of The Day-The Danleers

Artist:The Danleers
Song:One Summer Night
Album:WCBS FM101: History of Rock The 50s Part 1

One Summer Night was a top ten hit for The Danleers in 1958. It turned out to be their only chart hit. The Danleers were typical of doo wop groups of the 50s. They started out singing on Brooklyn streetcorners. Jimmy Weston was lead singer along with Johnny Lee, Willie Ephraim, Nat McCune and Roosevelt Mays. Danny Webb became the group's manager and songwriter. He even named the group after himself. One Summer Night was the first single. It was released on Bill Lasley's AMP 3 label. When One Summer Night became a regional hit, Lasley sold it to Mercury Records. Once it got national distribution, the record reached #7 on the Billboard singles chart. This procession was typical of how most doo wop singles became hits. It starts with a small label who sold it to a large label. The Danleers went on tour and appeared on TV. They recorded two more singles for Mercury and then were dropped when those went nowhere. Then the whole group jumped ship. Weston recruited all new singers and The Danleers recorded for Epic, Everest, Le-Mans and Mercury's Smash label. The Danleers disbanded for good in 1964. You can get One Summer Night on this Collectables various artists CD. Jimmy Weston revived The Danleers in the 70s to tour the nostalgia circuit. He did that until his 1993 death. Here's The Danleers performing One Summer Night 1958.
