Song:Nocturne
Album:Arclight
Julian Lage was a child prodigy who is one of today's top jazz guitarists. He started out as a sideman and he now leads his own trio on tour and he records for Mack Avenue Records. He was born Sept. 25, 1987 in Santa Rosa, CA. At the age of eight he played with Carlos Santana. He also played with Pat Metheny, Toots Thielemans and David Grisman among others. He was the subject of the 1996 Oscar nominated documentary Jules At Eight. Lage made his recording debut with Grisman on the 1999 album Dawg Duos. And he performed on the 2000 Grammy Awards. At age 15 Lage joined the faculty of Stanford University. He graduated from Berklee in 2008. Lage was also a member of Gary Burton's band. He made his recording debut as a leader with the 2009 album Sounding Point featuring Bela Fleck, Chris Thile and Taylor Eigsti. Lage currently records for Mack Avenue. Nocturne is from his 2016 CD Arclight recorded with Scott Colley on bass and Kenny Wolleson on drums. Lage recorded Arclight on a Fender Telecaster which isn't normally a jazz guitar. He says that is a tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan and others who play a Telecaster. Though he writes most of his own songs, Lage seems to have a thing for obscure jazz songs of the 30s. Nocturne was written and recorded by British bandleader Spike Hughes in 1930. Coleman Hawkins recorded it but it's not a jazz standard. Lage just released the CD Love Hurts with Jorge Roeder on bass and David King on drums. He tours Europe in March and then a US tour over the summer. He's coming to Toronto in September so I hope to see him live. Here's Julian Lage performing Nocturne at the Blue Whale in Los Angeles June 4, 2016.
