Song:There's A Cradle In Caroline
Album:1926-1928
Here's a 1927 recording that is historically significant because it features a cornet solo by the legendary Bix Beiderbecke. At the time he was a member of Frankie Trumbauer's band. The Trumbauer band recorded two songs as Broadway Bell-Hops. They were one of several bands led by Sam Lanin. He was born Sept. 4, 1891 in Russia and he grew up in Philadelphia. His brother Lester Lanin was a very famous bandleader. After serving in the US Navy in WWI in the band, Lanin moved to New York to lead the band at the famed Roseland Ballroom. He signed with Columbia Records in 1920. Lanin recorded under so many different band names that it is impossible to make sense of it. When the Broadway Bell-Hops first recorded in 1926, the trumpeter was the legendary Red Nichols. He appears on most of the recordings on this CD. But when Lanin needed to record in 1927 and his usual band wasn't available, he brought in sax player Frankie Trumbauer and his band including Bix Beiderbecke on cornet and Joe Venuti on violin. There's A Cradle In Caroline was a song Trumbauer recorded in 1926. Irving Kaufman is the singer and he appears on a lot of the Broadway Bell-Hops recordings. This recording also appears on some Bix Beiderbecke comps. Unfortunately the 1929 stock market crash killed Lanin's career and he was never able to return to his success of the 20s. He retired from the music business in 1936 and died in 1977. Here's a video for There's A Cradle In Caroline by Broadway Bell-Hops.
