Artist:Divine Brown
Song:Old Skool Love
Album:Juno Awards 2006
Chances are pretty good that if you live outside of Canada you have never heard of neo soul singer Divine Brown. But she is worth checking out. Her 2005 single Old Skool Love deserved a wider audience. She was born Michelle Brown Sept. 9, 1974 in Toronto. Her parents are Jamaican immigrants. She sang in clubs as a teen but couldn't get a record deal because record companies thought her sound was too sophisticated. So in the 90s Michelle worked as a background singer, vocal arranger and songwriter on albums by Carlos Morgan and Lovena Fox among others. She also recorded a couple of singles as Divine Earth Essence in 2002. She finally signed with Blacksmith Entertainment with Universal Canada distribution in 2005. She wrote and produced the 2005 album Divine Brown with James Bryan who had previously worked with Nelly Furtado. The album and single Old Skool Love got airplay in Canada but it was never released in the US. And the album is out of print. You can get Old Skool Love on the 2006 Juno Awards CD. Divine's 2008 album Love Chronicles was released on Warner Canada. Again this was not released in the US despite winning an R&B/Soul Recording Of The Year Juno. Though Divine Brown continues to perform in Toronto clubs and record occasionally, it doesn't look like her outstanding vocal talent will ever get the international exposure she deserves. Here's the video for Old Skool Love by Divine Brown.
