Song:Sally's Got A Wooden Leg
Album:Western Swing: The Absolutely Essential 3CD Collection
Sons of the West are a long forgotten Western Swing group whose best known song is Sally's Got A Wooden Leg from 1941. They were an offshoot of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. They were from Amarillo, TX. Fiddler Son Lansford was Wills' cousin and he was a member of the Texas Playboys for a time. He formed Sons of the West in 1936 in Fort Worth and moved to Amarillo because it was thought to be an untapped Western Swing market. The other main members were steel guitarist Billy Briggs and lead singer and bassist Jimmy Meek. He wrote Sally's Got A Wooden Leg. Other than that they seemed to go through a lot of musicians. They recorded for Decca in 1938 and then Lansford left and returned to Wills. Sally's Got a Wooden Leg was recorded for Columbia in 1941. The band ended when most of them were drafted into the service during WWII. Billy Briggs became a session musician and in the late 40s he led the band XIT Boys. You can get Sally's Got A Wooden Leg on this 3CD various artists budget comp. Here's a video for Sally's Got A Wooden Leg by Sons of the West.
