Song:Berkley Springs
Album:PS15
Fans of acoustic guitar may want to check out Don Ross who has had success in the New Age market. He won the National Fingerstyle Championship twice. He was born Nov. 19, 1960 in Montreal. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in music composition at York University in Toronto. He was studying to be a priest when he decided to be a musician. he released his first album on cassette in 1986. Ross performed with his singer wife Kelly McGowan in Harbord Trio and he was in the group Eye Music. After winning the 1988 National Fingerstyle Championship, he composed music for Toronto theater productions like The Ecstasy of Rita Joe. Ross recorded two albums for the Canadian label Duke Street and three for Sony Canada. Berkley Springs is from his 1999 album Passion Sessions. It was his first album for Virgin's Narada label which specializes in New Age music. After three albums, he moved to CandyRat, a label that specializes in solo guitar. Though he occasionally records in groups, most of Ross' albums are solo acoustic guitar. Among his influences are Michael Hedges, Bruce Cockburn, John Renbourn and Pat Metheny. He appeals to those who like guitar technique. There is a market for that but my tastes are a broader than that. PS15 was a 15th anniversary re-recording of Passion Sessions and it is available on CD. His latest CD A Million Brazilian Civilians was released in 2017. He tours but he only has one show scheduled right now. Here's Don Ross performing Berkley Springs 2015. He has a whole bunch of these videos on Youtube.
