Artist:Jim Hall & Pat Metheny
Song:All The Things You Are
Album:Jim Hall & Pat Metheny
Jim Hall was one of Pat Metheny's guitar idols and a major influence. After Metheny became famous, recording with Hall was a bucket list item. He finally got to do that in 1999 and they even did a TV show together. Of course Hall was so versatile he could record anything with anybody. And he recorded with many musicians over the years. Metheny first met Hall when Attila Zoller brought 15 year old Metheny to a club called The Guitar and Metheny played a set with Hall and bassist Ron Carter. But with everyone's busy schedule, Metheny didn't know if he would ever get to record with Hall. This 1999 album was recorded for Hall's label Telarc. Part of it was recorded in the studio and the rest was recorded live at the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild in Pittsburgh. There is no band. It's just the two of them though Metheny's bassist Steve Rodby and pianist Gil Goldstein produced the album. Apparently Metheny wanted only to record Brazilian standards from the 60s. Hall thought that would be boring. Most of the studio recordings are a series of improvisations and the live recordings are standards like the Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein classic All The Things You Are. This album is available as a budget CD. Hall and Metheny also appeared on the 2006 TV series Legends of Jazz hosted by Ramsey Lewis. The entire half hour episode can be viewed on Youtube. The CD and video should make jazz guitar fans very happy.
