Album:Joy in the Journey: 10 Years of Greatest Hits
CCM singer songwriter Michael Card had success on the Christian charts in the 80s. He's not a pop singer. He's more of a folk style singer and he plays piano. His music is aimed at an older audience and that's why he is still around. But he was never someone who was going to cross over to mainstream. And record companies were doing that a lot in the 80s. He was born Apr. 11, 1957 in Madison, TN which is a Nashville suburb. His father was a doctor and his grandfather was a Baptist minister. Card earned bachelor's and master's degrees in biblical studies at Western Kentucky University. He got his start in music when one of his professors asked him to write music to accompany weekly sermons at the church. Card was asked to record a demo by his friend Randy Scruggs. Of course he the son of bluegrass legend Earl Scruggs. Scruggs was looking for producing work. The Christian label Milk & Honey agreed to hire Scruggs and Card. So Scruggs produced Card's first two albums. Then Card signed with EMI's Sparrow label and spent the bulk of his career there. Joy in the Journey is from his 1987 album The Final Word. Card wrote all the songs and he also plays piano. The producer was Nashville studio veteran Norbert Putnam. You can get Card's 80s hits on this comp. Card was on Sparrow until 1994. In recent years he has recorded on his own label. Card considers his music as secondary to his bible teachings. So he has written 22 books and he hosts a podcast. Here's Michael Card performing Joy in the Journey.
