El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico is one of Puerto Rico's top salsa bands. They have been around for sixty years. They have had ups and downs. But they underwent a big revival when the 2011 album Sin Salsa No Hay Paraiso was nominated for a Grammy and the single was a top ten tropical hit. El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico was formed in 1962. Rafael Ithier was a member of Rafael Cortijo's band when singer Ismael Rivera was arrested on drug charges. Ithier and some of the other musicians left the band. Gema Records owner Rafael Alves Guedes needed a band for an album he was recording with Dominican singer. Joseito Mateo. Ithier brought in some musicians. After the recording, they decided to form a band. El Gran Combo released their debut album in 1963. Roberto Roena and Andy Montanez were the singers in the early days. They were replaced by Charlie Aponte and Jerry Rivas in the early 70s. That's when they started their own label. They were very popular in Puerto Rico and other Latin countries. Sin Salsa No Hay Paraiso was first recorded in 1983. When El Gran Combo signed a new record deal with Sony Latin, they decided to record some of their old songs for the 2011 album Sin Salsa No Hay Paraiso. The album was nominated for a Grammy and a Billboard Music Award. They are still going strong. They released their latest album in 2021. There have been plenty of changes but Ithier and Rivas still lead the band. Here's the video for Sin Salsa no Hay Paraiso by El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico.
