Artist:Moon Taxi
Song:Two High
Album:Let the Record Play
Moon Taxi is an alternative rock band who scored their biggest hit with the 2017 single Two High when they went for a more commercial pop sound. Lead singer and guitarist Trevor Terndrup and bassist Tommy Putnam attended high school together in the Birmingham, AL suburb of Vestavia Hills. They were in the band Apex. After graduating high school, they moved to Nashville to attend Belmont University. That's where all aspiring musicians go. There they met guitarist Spencer Thomson and drummer David Swan and they formed Moon Taxi. After graduating from Belmont, Swan left the band to become a US Army aviator. he was replaced by Terndrup and Putnam's high school buddy Tyler Ritter. They also added keyboard player Wes Bailey. At first they were a jam rock band similar to Gov't Mule. They released three albums on their own label and then signed a distribution deal with BMG which is more of a publishing company. Most of their success was touring and opening for Gov't Mule and Umphrey's McGee. For the 2015 album Daybreaker, they decided to go with a more commercial sound. Rolling Stone said they sounded like Kings of Leon. This led to a new deal with Sony's RCA label for the 2017 album Let the Record Play. The single Two High reached #3 on the Adult Alternative chart. And yes, the song sounds like Imagine Dragons. Moon Taxi write and produce everything so this more commercial approach is self motivated. My guess is listeners thought it was an Imagine Dragons song. I guess the bottom line is the change worked as it got Moon Taxi on a major label. And touring with more commercial bands. There was no hit single from the 2021 album Silver Dream so maybe the success was short lived. Here's the video for Two High by Moon Taxi.
