Artist:Edwyn Collins
Song:A Girl Like You
Album:Gorgeous George
Scottish singer songwriter Edwyn Collins scored his only US chart hit when A Girl Like You appeared in the 1995 film Empire Records. The song was a top ten hit in England. Some of his other songs have charted in England. I don't think Collins has ever recorded for a major label. He was born Aug. 23, 1959 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He formed The Nu-Sonics in 1976 and changed the name to Orange Juice in 1979. They recorded three albums for Polydor. Their 1983 single Rip It Up was a top ten hit in England. But for the most part, Polydor was unhappy with the band's lack of success and dropped them in 1985. Then Orange Juice split up. This experience may explain why Collins doesn't record for major labels. Collins signed a solo deal with Creation Records' Elevation label. After one EP, Collins had a falling out with Creation owner Alan McGee. He released his first two albums on Demon Records. The first album did OK. But Demon was unhappy with the second album. For the 1994 album Gorgeous George, Collins signed with Setanta Records and Bar/None in the US. The big surprise was when A Girl Like You appeared in the 1995 film Empire Records and was released as the second single. It reached #32 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #4 on the British Singles chart. The film was a flop but the soundtrack was a success. It's available but too expensive. Gorgeous George is available as a budget CD. In recent years, Empire Records has developed a cult following. Collins continued to release albums until a 2005 cerebral haemorrhage led to surgery and a lengthy recovery. He had to learn to talk again. By 2007, Collins had recovered enough that he could record again. He currently records for his own label and his latest album was released in 2019. Here's the video for A Girl Like You by Edwyn Collins.
