Artist:Ini Kamoze
Song:Here Comes the Hotstepper
Album:Pret-A-Porter: Music from the Motion Picture
Jamaican singer Ini Kamoze's career was going nowhere when the 1994 single Here Comes the Hotstepper topped the charts for two weeks. Not only was this a surprise hit but it is a one hit wonder. Maybe you heard it on Tik Tok recently. Kamoze was born Cecil Campbell Oct. 9, 1957 in Saint Mary, Jamaica. After releasing a couple of singles, he released a 1984 EP on Island followed by a couple of albums on Island's Mango label. Sly and Robbie produced. Though he had some hits in Jamaica like Shocking Out, by 1988 Kamoze wasn't happy and he took a break from the music business. He returned in 1994 with Here Comes the Hotstepper. This was produced by Fugees producer Salaam Remi. After Epic put it on the various artists album Stir It Up and it was used in the film Pret-A-Porter, Here Comes the Hotstepper topped the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks. Columbia then released an Ini Kamoze album. There are several samples on Here Comes the Hotstepper but the big one is Chris Kenner's Land of a Thousand Dances. You can get Here Comes the Hotstepper on plenty of various artists CDs but the soundtrack for Pret-A-Porter is available as a budget CD. Kamoze is still around. He released his latest album in 2016. But I think it's fair to say that another chart hit is unlikely. However, after the song appeared on a Tik Tok video, Here Comes the Hotstepper charted again. Here's the video for Here Comes the Hotstepper by Ini Kamoze.
