Steve Davis is one of today's top jazz trombonists. He has recorded as a leader since the 90s and he is a very busy sideman. He was born Apr. 14, 1967 in Worcester, MA and he grew up in Binghampton, NY. His grandmother played stride piano in local clubs. So that's most of his inspiration though his dad also took him to jazz concerts. He switched to trombone while in the high school band and he attended summer workshops at SUNY Binghampton taught by Bob Brookmeyer and Joe Lovano. Davis studied at Hartt College of Music in Hartford, CT. His instructor was alto sax legend Jackie McLean. After graduating, McLean got him a job in the final version of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Davis joined in 1989 and Blakey died in 1990. Davis returned to Hartt College and has been on the faculty ever since. And he also made his recording debut as a leader in 1994. Since then he has recorded for Criss Cross, Stretch, Posi-Tone and currently Davis records for Smoke Sessions. Pinnacles is a JJ Johnson song from the 2015 album Say When. It was Davis' first album on Smoke Sessions. He recorded several Johnson songs on this album. Musicians are Eric Alexander on tenor sax, Eddie Henderson on trumpet, Harold Mabern on piano, Nat Reeves on bass and Joe Farnsworth on drums. He has worked with Alexander and Farnsworth in the band One For All. They have recorded several albums since the mid-90s. Davis was also a member of Chick Corea's Origin. Davis' latest album Correlations was released in 2019. He has appeared on recent albums by Corea, Michel Camilo, Christian McBride and Harold Mabern. Here's Steve Davis with Josh Bruneau on trumpet, Tony Davis on guitar, Anthony Wonsey on piano, Ugonna Ogekwo on bass and Jason Tieman on drums performing Pinnacles at Smalls Jazz club in New York Nov. 30, 2017.
