AccuRadio Song Of The Day-James Farm

Artist:James Farm

Song:Polliwog

Album:James Farm

James Farm is a jazz quartet led by third generation jazz musician Joshua Redman. He is one of today's top sax players. The four guys had worked together in other bands like SF Jazz Collective and decided to form James Farm in 2009. Redman was born Feb. 1, 1969 in Berkeley, CA. His grandfather was trumpeter and 30s bandleader Don Redman. His father was sax player Dewey Redman. Redman attended Harvard and had been accepted into Yale Law School. But instead he moved to New York and started playing gigs to pay the rent. After winning the 1991 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition, Redman signed with Warner Bros. and released his debut album in 1993. He currently records for Warner's Nonesuch label. Bassist Matt Penman and drummer Eric Harland appeared on pianist Aaron Parks 2008 album Invisible Cinema. Parks approached Redman about forming a band. James Farm was born. They toured and then released the 2011 album James Farm. Redman wrote Polliwog but all four guys wrote songs for the album. After releasing a second album in 2014, all four guys returned to their individual careers. Redman's latest album RoundAgain was released in 2020. It's a quartet with Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride and Brian Blade. Aaron Parks' latest album Little Big II: Dreams of a Mechanical Man was released in 2020. Eric Harland is currently in Charles Lloyd and the Marvels. Matt Penman is in SF Jazz Collective. That's where they all met. Here's James Farm performing Polliwog on WNYC's Soundcheck 2011.
