World renowned jazz trumpeter Terence Blanchard will be appearing in concert tonight at the Humber College Lakeshore Campus Auditorium. He will be appearing with the Humber Studio Jazz Ensemble conducted by Denny Christanson. Blanchard is an Artist In Residence at Humber and has been in town teaching since Monday. It's not everyday we get a world famous jazz musician in South Etobicoke so I will be there. I don't even have to take the subway. It's ten minutes from home. Of course Blanchard is not only a great jazz musician but has been composing film scores since he scored Spike Lee's 1989 film Do The Right Thing. This concert will feature music from Blanchard's 1999 CD Jazz in Film. These are orchestrations of jazz influenced movie themes including Alex North's A Streetcar Named Desire, Jerry Goldsmith's Chinatown, Andre Previn's The Subterraneans, Duke Ellington's Anatomy Of A Murder, Quincy Jones' The Pawnbroker, Bernard Herrmann's Taxi Driver, Elmer Bernstein's Man With The Golden Arm and Blanchard's theme for Clockers. Blanchard's mix of film and jazz can be very instructive for young musicians. Terence Blanchard's latest CD Choices was his debut CD for Concord Jazz last year. His most recent soundtrack CD was for Spike Lee's 2008 film The Miracle Of St. Anna. He won a Grammy in 2007 for A Tale Of God's Will and won a Grammy in 2008 for Be-Bop. And he played trumpet in the 2009 Disney film The Princess & The Frog. To give you an idea of the music at tonight's concert, here's a video for Taxi Driver by Terence Blanchard.
