Jango Song Of The Day-Candi Staton

Artist:Candi Staton
Song:Young Hearts Run Free
Album:The Best Of Candi Staton

Canzella "Candi" Staton has bounced between gospel and secular music for most of her career. Young Hearts Run Free was her biggest pop hit in 1976. But she was a regular on the R & B and dance charts in the late 70s. She was born Mar. 13, 1940 in Hanceville, AL and sang with the Jewell Gospel Trio as a teen. She went to Muscle Shoals in 1968 and was named First Lady Of Southern Soul with songs like In The Ghetto and Stand By Your Man. As Southern Soul went out of fashion in the 70s, Candi got together with veteran producer Dave Crawford (Wilson Pickett) and signed with Warner Bros. and they made her a disco diva with Songs Like Young Hearts Run Free. That song reached #2 on the R & B singles chart and #20 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was written and produced by Crawford. She left Warners in 1982 and you can get her Warners songs on this comp. She started a ministry in Atlanta with husband John Sussewell and has recorded several gospel albums. She has been a regular in Bill Gaither's shows for years. She has periodically returned to secular music in the 90s with Brirish music maven Ian Levine and more recently with some Muscle Shoals guys with the 2006 CD His Hands. Here's Candi Staton performing Young Hearts Run Free 1976.
