You win a gold star if you know that Patricia "Bonnie" Pointer is one of The Pointer Sisters. But Bonnie left before The Pointer Sisters became really successful in the 80s and had a big dance hit with this 1978 cover of the Motown classic Heaven Must Have Sent You. She was born July 11, 1950 in Oakland, CA the second youngest of the four sisters. Bonnie and June started singing together as teens and then recruited June and became The Pointer Sisters. Bonnie left to go solo just when they were starting to have success in 1977. She signed with Motown and met and married producer Jeffrey Bowen. He had been a producer at Invictus/Hot Wax. He produced her self titled debut album and Heaven Must Have Sent You reached #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #8 on the dance music charts. It is a Holland-Dozier-Holland song originally recorded by The Elgins. Bonnie recorded a second album for Motown in 1980 but left due to a contract dispute. She recorded one more album in 1984 and hasn't recorded since. You can get Heaven Must Have Sent You on this various artists comp from Hip-O. So why hasn't she rejoined The Pointer Sisters? It doesn't look like they want her to return. I guess they don't get along. Here's Bonnie Pointer performing Heaven Must Have Sent You on The Midnight Special 1980.
Bonnie, Anita, and Ruth sang together for the first time in years last summer (August '09) at Canter's in LA. You can watch video footage of the night on Youtube. Since then they've recorded a song together which is to be released on Bonnie's new solo CD in June.
