Artist:The Blasters
Song:Dark Night
Album:The Blasters Collection
The roots rock group The Blasters were a bit of a surprise success in the early 80s. The weren't a punk band but seemed to find an audience with punk music fans. The Blasters started in Downey, CA in 1979 by brothers Dave Alvin (born Nov. 11, 1955 in Downey) & Phil Alvin (born Mar. 6, 1953 in Downey) along with bassist John Bazz and drummer Bill Bateman. The Alvin brothers had been interested in the blues growing up and learned to play hanging around Los Angeles clubs. They made their name playing in Los Angeles clubs sharing the bill with punk bands and their 1980 debut American Music had mostly covers of rock standards. They signed with Slash Records and by their 1981 album The Blasters, they added pianist Gene Taylor and sax players Steve Berlin & Lee Allen to the group. The album reached #36 on the album charts. Berlin left in 1983 to join Los Lobos. Dark Night is from the 1985 album Hard Line which was produced by Ry Cooder. The Blasters split up at that point. Dark Night got a second life when it was featured in the 1996 film From Dusk Till Dawn. The song has a cult following and you can get that and other Blasters songs on this comp. Dave Alvin has had a scuccessful solo career. Phil Alvin went back to school and after a 2002 reunion show, Phil reformed The Blasters and they still tour today. They last recorded in 2004. Here's a video for Dark Night by The Blasters from From Dusk Till Dawn.
