Up and comers shine on JEWELS show

JEWELS held their second event today at Shinjuku FACE in front of an announced attendance of 588. When I looked at the lineup for this show, it didn't seem to have a main event as there were no name fighters on the show. There are fighters on this show that have potential so I would describe it as an up and comers show. All matches were scheduled for two five minute rounds. The announced main event was a 58kg match with veteran Saori Ishioka against pro wrestler Hanako Kobayashi making her MMA debut. The joshi puroresu business has had a long history with women's MMA but the wrestlers have had mixed success at best. Kobayashi said that she has grappling training and has been working on her kicks. Kobayashi begins with straight rights and a left hook. Ishioka attempts a throw but then drops Kobayashi with a straight right. Then she drops her again. There's a three knockdown rule in JEWELS. And that's what happens. The ref stops the match and Ishioka wins by TKO. Ishioka said afterwards that she was happy with her aggressiveness and thought that strikes would be effective with a pro wrestler.

HIROKO had no trouble in her Open Weight match against Michiko Takeda. HIROKO's height makes her very difficult to deal with. She struck Takeda repeatedly and then took her down. Takeda's takedown attempts were unsuccessful and Hiroko continued to hammer her. This continued in round two and a straight right forced Takeda to pitch forward and the ref stopped the match at 25 seconds of round two. HIROKO said afterwards that she wants a rematch with Hitomi Akano to avenge her only defeat on the May 16 JEWELS show. Yasuko Tamada faced Misaki Takimoto in a 48kg match. Tamada began with strikes and threw Takimoto. Takimoto reversed and then pushed Tamada into the corner with strikes. Takimoto scores with knee kicks but Tamada grapples out of it and they both go down. Takimoto tries a left hook but Tamada tackles her and gets her into a sleeper on the ropes when the round ends. Round two continues this pattern as Takimoto throws punches and Tamada goes for takedowns. Finally one of Tamada's takedowns keeps Takimoto down. She gets control and passes guard. So it was close but that was enough to give Tamada a unanimous decision.

In an Open Weight match, Super Benkei faced pro wrestler Chiaro Oikawa in her MMA debut. Oikawa takes Benkei down. But Benkei reverses and mounts Oikawa. Oikawa escapes and they stand up. Benkei controls the rest of round one with strikes, knee kicks and throws. This continues in round two until Benkei wins by submission with an armbar at 2:30 of round two. In a 52kg match, veteran Masako Yoshida faced Shinsaki Ozawa. Yoshida took Ozawa down but while they were down, Ozawa took an accidental shot to the face and started bleeding from the nose. The doctor stopped the bout at 54 seconds of round one. Yoshida wind by TKO. Ozawa was taken to the hospital and a CT scan was negative. In a 60kg match, Shizuka Sugiyama showed that she may be as good a fighter as she is pretty by dominating SHIHO. Sugiyama pounded SHIHO badly enough that the ref took a look at her but the match continued. Sugiyama continued the assault with knee kicks and throws. SHIHO was unable to defend herself and Sugiyama wins by TKO at 55 seconds of round two. Clearly, Shizuka Sugiyama is a fighter to watch. In the 60kg opener, HARUMI tried to defend against Rina Tomita's aggressive offense by clutch and grab. It doesn't work and Tomita takes her down several times. Tomita goes for a takedown at the start of round two and forces HARUMI to submitwith an armbar at 22 seconds of round two. The next JEWELS show will be May 16 at Shinjuku FACE.
