Artist:The Hearts
Song:Lonely Nights
Album:The Doo Wop Box II
This 1954 doo wop classic is interesting because apparently The Hearts were the very first all girl doo wop group. But the woman behind the group seemed to specialize in girl groups and went on to some success later on. The Hearts were Bronx high school students Louise Harris, Joyce West, Hazel Crutchfield & Forestine Barnes. Aspiring songwriter and producer Zell Sanders recruited the girls to rehearse her songs. Pianist and arranger Rex Garvin was a neighbour and she asked him to accompany the girls. This led to a contract with Baton Records. They had a big hit with The Revileers. Lonely Nights was released in 1954 and was a top ten R & B hit. It's a pretty good song and is another nugget on the 4CD box set The Doo Wop Box II. Sanders started her own label J & S Records and revived The Hearts in 1957 with four different girls. Sanders & Garvin would later have success with the 1957 hit Over The Mountain Across The Sea by Johnnie & Joe and especially when she revived The Hearts again in 1963 as The Jaynettes with the smash hit Sally Go Round The Roses. Here's a video for Lonely Nights by The Hearts.
