Artist:The Guess Who
Song:Hand Me Down World
Album:The Best Of The Guess Who
The Guess Who were the first Canadian band to have a #1 hit in the US. Hand Me Down World was a top 20 hit and was recorded by the Burton Cummings led lineup after Randy Bachman left. The band was started by Chad Allan (born Allan Kowbell Mar. 29, 1943 in Winnipeg) as Chad Allan & The Expressions. They had a hit in 1965 with Shakin' All Over and Quality Records decided to sell them as a mystery group (Guess Who?) and that's where the name came from. Burton Cummings (born Dec. 31, 1947 in Winnipeg) joined as keyboard player and vocalist in 1966. Allan left and Cummings and guitarist Randy Bachman (born Sept. 27, 1943 in Winnipeg) took over the group. Other members were Jim Kale & Garry Peterson. The turning point for The Guess Who was when Toronto based record producer Jack Richardson got them a deal with RCA Records. This produced These Eyes, the first #1 US hit for a Canadian band. American Woman was even bigger in 1969. But Bachman & Cummings weren't getting along. Bachman is a Mormon and didn't care much for the rock & roll lifestyle. He would leave to form Brave Belt and then later Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Cummings brought in guitarists Kurt Winter & Greg Leskiw to replace him and Winter wrote Hand Me Down World for the 1971 album Share The Land. It was a top 20 hit. The Guess Who split up in 1975. RCA reissued this comp in 2006 with three bonus tracks. Cummings went on to a solo career and the group has reformed occasionally. Jim Kale & Garry Peterson currently lead a version of The Guess Who. They were a very important band for the Canadian music industry. Here's a video of Hand Me Down World by The Guess Who.
