Song:Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree
Album:Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree: The Decca Christmas Recordings
Brenda Lee was 13 years old when she recorded Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree in 1958. Of course Brenda is famous for hits like I'm Sorry. But Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree is a Christmas perennial and it has sold over 25 million copies. Brenda had already recorded I'm Gonna Lasso Santa Claus in 1956. So when Owen Bradley asked Brenda to record Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree, it doesn't look like anyone thought it would be a hit. It wasn't on an album. The song became popular after Brenda became a star in 1960. Since then Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree has returned to the Billboard seasonal charts annually. I don't think it's as big as White Christmas but it's high on the list. Brenda recorded a Christmas album in 1964 and that's mostly what you will get on this CD. Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree was written Johnny Marks. Though he was Jewish, Marks wrote mostly Christmas songs like Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, A Holly Jolly Christmas and Run Rudolph Run. He also wrote all the songs on those Rankin Bass animated Christmas specials of the 60s. So Marks may be as essential to Christmas as Bing Crosby. The cream of Nashville session musicians play on this record including Hank Garland and Harold Bradley on guitar, Floyd Cramer on piano, Boots Randolph on sax, Bob Moore on bass and Buddy Harman on drums. Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree is frequently covered. Alabama charted with their 1999 version. And Le Ann Rimes charted with her 2004 recording. Here's Brenda Lee performing Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree 1984.
