Song:Slow
Album:Shift
Sax player Logan Richardson is mainly a sideman. But his 2015 major label debut Shift did well on the jazz charts. He was born July 29, 1980 in Kansas City, MO. His parents listened to jazz and Richardson started playing the flute at age 12. He started playing alto sax while attending the Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts. He left school at age 16 and played local clubs until he left Kansas City at age 19. He studied at Berklee in Boston and New School University in New York. Among his teachers were Greg Tardy and Joe Chambers and he appeared on albums by both. He first recorded as a leader in 2007 and then 2008. He was also a member of the group Equality led by drummer Nasheet Waits who is the son of drummer Freddie Waits. Richardson started splitting his time between New York and Paris. He now lives in Paris full time. I first heard of him when he was in the band NEXT Collective with bassist Ben Williams and pianist Gerald Clayton. The 2013 album Cover Art on Concord was jazz covers of rock songs. He also appeared on Clayton's 2013 album Life Forum. Shift was released on Blue Note in 2015. It features Pat Metheny on guitar and Jason Moran on piano along with Harish Raghavan of the group Act on bass and Nasheet Waits on drums. It did well on the jazz charts. If I had to guess, Metheny fans bought the record. Richardson's latest CD Blues People was released on his own label through Ropeadope Records. On this he works with musicians from his home town of Kansas City. Richardson isn't touring right now so he may be working on a new album. His next album will be released by Chick Corea's Stretch label through Universal. Here's the video for Slow by Logan Richardson.
