Song:Do Something Now
Album:The Steve Camp Collection
Back in the 80s you probably all remember charity singles like Do They Know It's Christmas by Band Aid and We Are The World by USA For Africa. Those are probably the best known charity singles but there were plenty of other charity singles at the time. The 1985 single Do Something Now gathers many of the Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) artists of the time. They called themselves Christian Artists United to Save the Earth or The Cause. The proceeds went to Compassion International for African famine relief. That organization has been around since the 50s and it's still around. They basically copied We Are The World. Maybe they should have tried to do something different so they don't look like copycats. The song was written arranged and produced by popular CCM artist Steve Camp. And of course the choir was all popular CCM artists. The song begins with a solo by Amy Grant who was probably the most popular CCM artist at the time. The other solos are by Second Chapter of Acts, Dana Key of DeGarmo & Key, Evie Karlsson, Jessy Dixon, Kathy Troccoli, Larry Norman, Matthew Ward, Michelle Pillar, Mylon Lefevre, Phil Keaggy, Russ Taff, Sandi Patti, Scott Wesley Brown, Sheila Walsh and Steve Taylor. Sparrow Records only released Do Something Now as a single. But you can get it as a digital download as part of The Steve Camp Collection. By the 80s CCM was heavily influenced by secular music. So it's not surprising that this record comes across as very derivative of We Are The World. Here's the video of Do Something Now by The Cause.
