Sax player Tim Berne has been recording as a leader and a sideman since the late 70s. His music leans towards the avant garde. He currently records for ECM Records. He was born Oct. 14, 1954 in Syracuse, NY. Berne bought an alto sax while attending Lewis and Clarke College in Oregon. He was interested in R&B until he heard legendary avant garde sax player Julius Hemphill. Berne decided he wanted to play more adventurous music. He moved to New York in 1974 and took lessons from Hemphill and also became his manager. Berne first recorded for his own label Empire in 1979. In the 80s, he recorded for the Italian label Soul Note. He took a major label detour when he recorded two albums for Columbia in the 80s. He also worked regularly with guys like Bill Frisell and John Zorn. In the 90s he recorded for the German label JMT and Berne again started his own label Screwgun. Berne signed with the German label ECM for the 2012 CD Snakeoil. That's also the name of his current band. I guess as jazz labels go ECM is major. ECM has a signature polished sound by owner and producer Manfred Eicher. Musicians are Oscar Noriega on clarinet, Matt Mitchell on piano and Ches Smith on drums. They have worked together in other bands like John Hollenbeck's Claudia Quintet and Rudresh Mahanthappa. Berne's latest ECM album Incidentals was released last year and he and Mitchell have recorded recently as a duo for the album Angel Dusk. Berne is recommended to those interested in avant garde jazz. Here's Tim Berne's Snakeoil performing Spare Parts at SESC in Sao Paulo, Brazil Mar. 30, 2015.
